LOGLINE
A woman on the verge of escaping her abusive marriage is stopped at the door, not by her husband, but by the voices of the people who once failed her, forcing her into a final battle between fear and freedom.
SYNOPSIS
After years of enduring abuse in silence, ATIENO (30), finally decides to leave her marriage. But as she steps out with her bags, the voices of family, religion, culture, and society close in around her - each reminding her to stay, endure, and protect the image of marriage at all cost. Overwhelmed by fear, and judgement, Atieno almost gives up. But in a quiet moment of clarity, she makes a life-changing choice: to walk away and reclaim her freedom, no matter the uncertainty ahead. UTAENDA WAPI? (Where will you go?) Is a psychological drama about emotional imprisonment, societal pressure, and the courage it takes for a woman to choose herself.
WHAT MAKES THIS FILM UNIQUE AND NECESSARY
This film is unique because it tells the story of abuse from a psychological and cultural perspective rather than relying on physical confrontation or dramatic spectacle. The film externalizes the voices many victims hear internally from family, religion, friends, and society - showing how emotional pressure can become just as imprisoning as violence itself. By grounding the story in an authentic African social context, the film speaks to realities that are rarely explored with such simplicity and honesty.
This film is also necessary because many victims do not stay in abusive situations because they want to, but because they are made to feel and believe they have nowhere else to go. This film challenges that silence and forces audiences to confront the system, beliefs, and everyday conversations that enable abuse to continue. It is a story about fear, conditioning survival, and ultimately, the courage to choose oneself.
WRITER/DIRECTOR'S NOTE - (Collins Odhiambo)
As a filmmaker, I am drawn to intimate human stories that reflect the emotional realities many people silently live through. UTAENDA WAPI? (Where will you go?) Was born from observing how often victims of abuse are not only fighting the abuser, but also the voices around them. I wanted to tell a story that captures the emotional and psychological weight of staying versus leaving. Through a minimal, intimate approach, the film explores silence, fear, and the courage it takes to walk away.
